It has been claimed that some European Union (EU) member countries, including Ireland and Spain, are considering recognizing the Palestinian state on May 21.

According to the news of Irish Radio and Television (RTE), contacts between Ireland, Spain, Slovenia and Malta regarding the recognition of the Palestinian state have intensified.

A spokesman for Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense Micheal Martin also confirmed that these talks were continuing.

Allegedly, some EU countries, including Ireland and Spain, will announce that they recognize the Palestinian state on May 21.

It is known that Ireland, Slovenia, Malta and Norway supported the initiative to recognize the Palestinian state, which was pioneered and lobbied by Spain.

The Palestinian state is currently recognized by 8 EU members: Bulgaria, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus and Sweden.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policies Josep Borrell also stated that he expected some EU countries to officially recognize Palestine.
