Everwild Executive Producer Finds New Role Within Xbox Game Studios After Project Cancellation
the cancellation of Rare’s aspiring adventure game, Everwild, triggered significant changes within the growth team. Now, a key figure from the project has transitioned to a new leadership position within Xbox Game Studios.
Louise O’Connor, the former executive producer of Everwild, has been appointed as chief of staff at Xbox Game Studios after a remarkable 25-year tenure at Rare. This move follows a period of restructuring at Microsoft that included layoffs and the unfortunate shelving of the long-in-development title.
A veteran of Rare
O’Connor’s career at Rare began with the iconic Nintendo 64 title, Conker’s Bad Fur Day. Throughout her time at the studio, she demonstrated versatility and leadership, eventually rising to head of animation and incubation director.
As incubation director, she was instrumental in fostering innovation and exploring new creative avenues for the studio. Her extensive experience made her a vital part of the Everwild project from its inception.
The Rise and Fall of Everwild
First revealed in 2019, Everwild quickly captured the attention of gamers with its promise of a beautiful and unique fantasy world.A subsequent trailer in 2020 showcased stunning environments and intriguing creatures, fueling anticipation.
However, development faced challenges, and updates became scarce. Ultimately, the project was cancelled in July, alongside broader layoffs impacting the Rare team.
Shifting Leadership at Xbox Game Studios
O’Connor’s appointment mirrors a recent shift in leadership at Xbox Game Studios. Last year, craig Duncan, formerly the head of Rare, assumed the role of head of Xbox Game Studios following Alan Hartman’s retirement.
This demonstrates a clear pattern of recognizing and leveraging talent within the Xbox ecosystem. It also suggests a strategic effort to integrate experienced developers into key leadership positions.
Further Departures at Rare
The impact of the Everwild cancellation extended beyond O’Connor. Gregg Mayles, a 35-year veteran of Rare and director on titles like Sea of Thieves and Banjo-Kazooie, also departed the studio following the microsoft layoffs.
These departures highlight the significant disruption caused by the project’s cancellation and the subsequent restructuring.
This personnel shift signals a period of transition for both Rare and Xbox Game Studios as thay navigate new directions and future projects. It remains to be seen how these changes will shape the future of game development within the Xbox ecosystem, but O’Connor’s new role positions her to play a key part in that evolution.
