Modernization of surgical management of ophthalmological pathologies. Cataract surgery is evolving at the Anosiala University Hospital Center (CHU). Since 2023, the hospital has used phacoemulsification to operate on its patients. This is a very advanced ophthalmic surgical technique that involves extracting the clouded lens using ultrasound and replacing it with an intraocular lens. “The advantages of this technique are the speed of the operation and the convalescence time,” said Professor Gaëtan Duval Solofomalala of Anosiala University Hospital yesterday. This year, a modern operating microscope, equipped with LED lighting, a double optical channel (operator + operating assistant) and a video monitor completed the technical platform of the ophthalmology department of Anosiala University Hospital. This device allows the safety of surgical interventions. “As part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR), TotalEnergies is committed to promoting access to health for the most vulnerable populations. This initiative reflects its desire to respond to societal challenges in a sustainable way, by bringing a positive impact to the communities where it operates,” says Marième Sav Sow, general manager of TotalEnergies Marketing Madagasikara which financed the purchase of this device.

These devices are used during cataract surgery campaigns carried out by the Anosiala University Hospital and the Pneumo-Aide association. From April 30 to March 5, around fifty patients were operated on in this hospital during an ophthalmological mission by this humanitarian association. Yesterday and today, operated patients had a check-up at the hospital.

The two annual ophthalmological missions of the Pneumo-Aide association do not only consist of operating on patients, but also of training Malagasy surgeons in the most advanced ophthalmological surgical techniques, and of detecting and treating surgical pathologies.
