Family and friends gathered Tuesday to commemorate the life of Honesty Cheadle, a 3-year-old girl who was shot and killed in Southeast D.C., one year after the incident. According to family members, the child was killed after being shot early July 5, 2025, while sitting in her family’s car following a Fourth of July fireworks celebration.

The tragedy occurred on 14th Street in Southeast D.C., where a gunman opened fire on the vehicle. Honesty Cheadle was struck during the attack and died a few days later. Investigators arrested and charged 24-year-old Charles Rucker with first-degree murder.

Police officials stated during the investigation that they believed the family’s car was intentionally targeted. The Cheadle family continues to seek justice for the child, whom relatives described as a “beautiful soul” with a love for dolls and the cartoon character Bluey.

“We continue to try and be that light that she shared with us and continue to share with each other,” Easton said, noting that the family relies on their faith in God to cope with the loss.

The family emphasized that the primary goal of the anniversary gathering was to prevent the child from being forgotten. Easton stated that maintaining her memory is the most important priority for the family as they continue to push through their grief.
