The sexual recession experienced by Japan has an impact on all aspects, including a hereditary ceremony that has been going on for thousands of years, the Sominsai Festival.

Reporting from Asahi Shimbun on Thursday (22/2), the Sominsai Festival was held at Kokusekeki Temple on the seventh day of Chinese New Year. The ceremony is performed exclusively by men. Participants may only wear a loincloth (genital cover). In some places this festival is called Hakada Matsuri.

The sexual recession that hit Japan is starting to affect its cultural attractions, including the Sominsai Festival. The ceremony held in the cedar forest of the Iwate region of northern Japan was solemn.

Steam rose as hundreds of naked men fought over wooden amulets thrown by monks at the temple.

“Jasso, joyasa (evil, perish),” chanted rhythmically by ritual members.

Daigo Fujinami, a monk who lives at the temple, admitted that he had difficulty carrying out the ritual. He admitted that there was a shortage of young people and that it was a burden on the local elderly congregation. In fact, this festival was attended by hundreds of participants.

“It’s very difficult to organize a festival of this size,” the monk said.

This festival has been held for thousands of years. Whoever gets the talisman is believed to be lucky for the next year.

“I cannot close my eyes to this difficult reality,” he said.

Toshiaki Kikuchi, a local resident who once obtained the amulet, helped organize the ritual for many years. He hopes the ceremony will return to its glory days in the future.

“Even though it is in a different format, I hope this tradition will be maintained,” he said.

Actually, this festival is held in several temples. Many participants felt sad at the end of the ceremony.

“This is the last big festival that has been going on for 1,000 years. I really want to participate in this festival,” said Yasuo Nishimura, an Osaka resident.

As the number of young men began to decrease, the rules of the festival began to change. This year, a group of women were allowed to contribute which is usually only reserved for men.

Starting next year, Kokuseki Shrine will replace the festival with ceremonies and prayers and other ways to continue its spiritual practices.

“Japan is facing a declining birth rate, population, aging and a lack of young people to continue things. It may be difficult to continue things the same as in the past,” said Nishimura.
