It happened as many had expected: Fenerbahce provoked an abandonment of the Supercup duel with Galatasaray.

The final of the Turkish Super Cup between Istanbul’s arch-rivals Fenerbahce and Galatasaray has become the expected farce. In the second minute of the game, Fenerbahce’s players left the pitch as a unit.

At that point it was already 1-0 after a goal from Gala star Mauro Icardi after 51 seconds. Icardi applauded scornfully as the opponents, who had competed with their U19s, left the pitch.

Referee Volkan Bayarslan stopped the game after a short wait and Galatasaray’s players celebrated the victory in a quite bizarre scenario in front of their fans. The Süper Lig champions won the national Supercup for the 17th time.

Galatasaray tried to make the best of the situation and started a training game against their own reserves.

Fenerbahce’s president Ali Koc said before the game that they had to take “the first step of rebellion” to bring about changes in Turkish football.
