Rafah Border Crossing Facilitates Medical Departures and Returns Amidst Ongoing Restrictions
Gaza – The rafah Border Crossing continues to operate under a coordinated mechanism allowing for the passage of Palestinian patients seeking medical treatment in Egypt, and the return of individuals to the Gaza Strip. A fifth group of patients departed Gaza yesterday,heading to the Rafah crossing in preparation for travel to Egypt for treatment,while a fifth group of returnees arrived at the crossing to complete entry procedures into Gaza.
The ongoing operations follow the reopening of the Rafah crossing after a near two-year closure due to conflict and security restrictions. As its reopening last week, the crossing has seen a limited but vital flow of individuals. To date, 145 patients and their accompanying persons have left Gaza to receive medical care abroad, while 98 individuals have returned to the Strip.
The resumption of operations on Thursday saw the border open in both directions for patients, humanitarian cases, and those previously stranded. Initial expectations anticipated the passage of 50 Palestinians into Gaza and 50 patients with their companions traveling to Egypt on the first day. However, only 12 Palestinians were permitted entry, and just 8 individuals were allowed to depart. The following day saw 40 Palestinians return to Gaza after experiencing delays and obstacles imposed by the Israeli army at the crossing.
The limited capacity and logistical challenges highlight the ongoing difficulties in facilitating movement thru the Rafah Border Crossing, despite the critical need for medical access for Gaza residents. Authorities remain on high alert at the crossing,preparing to receive injured Palestinians arriving from Gaza,underscoring the urgent humanitarian situation. The coordinated efforts to maintain the medical travel mechanism represent a crucial lifeline for those requiring specialized care unavailable within the Gaza Strip.
