From this Monday onwards, you have a ‘green lane’ to go to a petrol station. This is because prices are falling again, similar to last week. “The evolution of prices in euros points to a drop in prices by 2.5 cents per liter for 95 gasoline and 2 cents per liter for diesel,” a source from one of the main national oil companies told ‘Executive Digest’.

Prices at gas stations next to hypermarkets follow the same line. “Next week’s trend will be for a drop of 0.0138 euros in gasoline and a reduction of 0.0149 euros in diesel,” said another source.

Filling up the tank with 95 gasoline now costs 10 euros more than in January

Since the beginning of the year, the price of diesel has increased by 2.4 cents per liter while gasoline has become 16.5 cents more expensive. This means that filling a 60 liter tank of diesel costs 1.44 euros more than it did 19 weeks ago. To top up a 95 fuel tank, it takes 10 euros more than in the first week of January.

Data from the General Directorate of Energy and Geology (DGEG) show that the average price of a liter of gasoline in Portugal currently costs 1,804 euros while diesel is worth 1,587 euros. Quotes may, however, vary across gas stations, as the price set on the network also takes into account the level of competition, supply and demand in each market and the level of fixed costs at each station.

In the most recent bulletin from the European Commission, Portugal is in tenth place among the countries with the most expensive gasoline in EU countries, 2 cents above the European average and 12.1 cents more expensive than in Spain. Diesel occupies 16th position.

The price difference between Portugal and Spain results from the tax burden, since, without taxes, the price of gasoline is cheaper in Portugal. Without the tax burden, each liter of 95 gasoline in Portugal would cost 89.1 cents, that is, less than the 92.1 cents in Spain.

Among EU countries, Denmark has the most expensive 95 gasoline on the Old Continent: 2,099 euros. Finland ‘reigns’ in diesel: 1,826 euros.
