Senegal – President-elect of Senegal Bassirou Diomaye – The Best Of Bassirou Diomayewho was sworn in as the country’s new leader on Tuesday this week, took to the stage holding the hands of his two wives, Marie and Absa.

With this, Senegal legally has two capitals, which is the first time this has happened in history. This is an unprecedented scene in the national politics of the West African country.

Polygamy is a traditional and religious practice that is deeply embedded in the culture of Senegal, where the majority of the population is Muslim.

Marie Khone, who until now has never been in the spotlight, comes from the same village as 44 year old Faye. They married 15 years ago and have four children.

He married his second wife Absa more than a year ago.

Despite the criticism, Faye, who received 54.28 percent in the March 24 election, showed nothing but pride in her family’s situation.

“I have beautiful children because I have extraordinary wives. They are very beautiful. I thank God they always support me completely,” he said when running for president, as reported by France 24Thursday, April 4 2024.

Polygamy has long caused controversy and Faye’s public appearances, with his two wives always by his side and supported by thousands of supporters have made him a major topic of conversation in the media, sparking mixed reactions.

“This is the highest recognition of the tradition of polygamy among the country’s top brass, with a situation that reflects the Senegalese reality,” said sociologist Djiby Diakhate. Many men praise the practice while women tend to remain in “disbelief,” he added.

However, many Senegalese women consider polygamy to be hypocritical and unfair, while the UN Human Rights Committee said in a 2022 report that polygamy constitutes discrimination against women and must end.

Polygamy is widespread in Senegal especially in rural areas and is considered a way to expand the family. Islam allows men to have up to four wives as long as they are financially capable. In cases like this, it takes the same and alternating time with the wives, between two and three days.
