The city district of Brno-sever is against the tram.

Brno is advancing its plans to build a tram line in the Lesná housing estate. A trolley line will be built instead. Yet. About 16,000 people live in the housing estate, and the tram line has been talked about for several decades. There are also tram tracks along the part of Merhautova Street that leads to Lesná.

According to the approved variant, the trolleybus line should lead along Seifertova and Okružní streets. “The operation of Soběšice would be handled by battery IMC vehicles (partial trolleybuses, editor’s note). At the same time, when building the traction masts, we will think of a territorial reserve that would possibly enable a change to tram transport in the future,” said transport councilor Petr Kratochvíl.

This follows from the decision of the councilors who dealt with the screening study from Mott MacDonald CZ. The current mayor of the Brno-sever district, Martin Maleček, who is also on the board of the transport company, is against the construction of the tram line. He has already said in the past that he does not want the tram because of the noise.

A complete reconstruction of the bridge over the railway line in Merhautov is currently underway, which will also include the construction of tracks across the bridge. The new bridge will have sufficient capacity for trolleybus and later also for tram traffic. “After the bridge repairs, we will continue to introduce trolleybuses to Lesná. The construction will also include a transformer station, which would also be important for any future modifications to the tram line. With this step, this entire area will be served purely by electric traction, with which the Brno transport company has a lot of experience.” said the mayor of the city of Brno, Markéta Vaňková.
