Brussels & Liège,Belgium – Air travel in Belgium faced meaningful disruption this evening as both Brussels Airport,the nation’s capital hub,and Liège Airport,a major cargo center,suspended all flight operations due to the presence of suspicious drones. The unprecedented shutdown has raised security concerns and left passengers scrambling.
The first reports surfaced shortly before 7:00 PM UK time, with a drone spotted in the vicinity of Brussels Airport. As a precautionary measure, airport authorities immediately halted all incoming and outgoing flights.
“The safety of our passengers and staff is our top priority,” stated a spokesperson for the Belgian air traffic control service, Kurt Verwilligen. “Following the drone sighting, we took the necessary steps to suspend operations until the situation could be fully assessed.”
Initially, some flights were diverted to Liège Airport to mitigate the impact of the Brussels closure. However, the situation quickly escalated when drones were also observed near Liège, forcing a similar suspension of all air traffic at that location.
Currently, authorities have not confirmed any connection between the drone sightings at the two airports. investigations are underway to determine the origin and intent behind the drone activity. The Belgian military is assisting in the effort to locate and neutralize any potential threats.
The disruption is expected to cause significant delays and cancellations for travelers. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on their flight status.
