Epic Games has announced that Fortnite creators will gain the ability to publish experiences featuring AI-powered non-player characters (NPCs) starting July 30. This update expands the platform’s creative tools by allowing developers to integrate characters with consistent voices and defined personas into their own custom game modes.
To support this launch, Epic Games has developed a library of 36 pre-built characters. These NPCs include recognizable staples from the Fortnite universe, such as Agent Jonesy, the banana-shaped Peely, the walking fish character Fishstick, and the mascot-headed Cuddle Team Leader.
Expanding AI Integration in Fortnite Creative
This initiative follows previous experiments with artificial intelligence in the game. Notably, last year’s inclusion of a Darth Vader NPC featured a voice model based on the late James Earl Jones. Epic Games confirmed that this specific collaboration was authorized and signed off on by the estate of James Earl Jones, establishing a precedent for how the company approaches synthetic performances of iconic voices.
