AlpineS Colapinto Involved in Testing Crash Amidst Seat Speculation
Franco Colapinto‘s challenging stint with Alpine took another turn this week, as the Formula 1 driver crashed during a Pirelli tyre test at the Hungaroring. This incident has reignited speculation about his future with the team, with several drivers potentially vying for his seat before the season concludes.
A Developing Situation at Alpine
the crash occurred at Turn 11, a high-speed right-hander known for its limited run-off area. Alpine has yet too release details surrounding the accident. This comes after a promising weekend for Colapinto at the same circuit, where he outperformed teammate Pierre Gasly in both qualifying and the race.
Though, his overall performance hasn’t met expectations, leading to rumors of a potential driver rotation. Several names are being considered as replacements:
Paul Aron: Alpine’s current reserve driver.
Valtteri Bottas: The Mercedes reserve driver, a seasoned F1 veteran.
Tire Testing continues Despite Incident
the Hungaroring test was primarily focused on evaluating Pirelli’s 2026 tires. These tires are slightly narrower than the current specification and are part of significant regulatory changes planned for next season. Despite Colapinto’s crash, pirelli was able to gather valuable data.
“We have collected a lot of data, even though it was a pity that we lost some of our potential mileage today when Colapinto went off the track, even though this was not in any way linked to the tyres,” explained mario Isola, Pirelli Motorsport boss.
What’s Next for Alpine and Pirelli?
Alpine utilized both its 2023 and 2024 cars during the test. Paul Aron drove on Tuesday, while Colapinto and Gasly were scheduled to share driving duties on Wednesday. Ferrari also participated, testing a modified version of their current car to simulate 2026 performance.
Hear’s a breakdown of the key deadlines for Pirelli:
September 1st: Final evaluation and homologation of tire construction.
December 15th: Homologation of tire compounds, following six additional test sessions at Monza, Mugello, and Mexico City.
Colapinto’s background and Alpine’s Strategy
Colapinto joined Alpine after nine races with Williams in the latter half of the 2024 season, where he secured five points. Alpine is clearly evaluating all options as they look to optimize their driver lineup for the remainder of the season and beyond. You can expect further developments as the team assesses its performance and prepares for the future.
