Six Hundred Hopefuls Chased Seven Openings
The selection process for the Fubon Angels mini training squad drew intense public scrutiny after social media posts from an eliminated trainee sparked online debate, forcing internal sources to clarify the evaluation standards and defend veteran members of the cheerleading squad.
The recruitment drive for the professional baseball cheerleading subsidiary of the Fubon Braves kicked off in late April, attracting over 600 initial applicants. Roughly 50 candidates advanced to the initial interviews, and 11 finalists reached the third round. Ultimately, the club narrowed the field down to seven candidates for the mini training squad, with a final roster scheduled to be locked in by mid-September.
This year marked a structural shift from the previous recruitment cycle. Successors earned designations as training squad members rather than immediate trainees, driven by rising standards and the growing public popularity surrounding the team. Spanning five months, the recruitment window stands as an unusually thorough timeline for a domestic professional sports organization in Taiwan.

The final screening put the seven remaining candidates through their paces across three distinct categories: offensive routines, defensive routines, and inning-transition performances. Officials split the aspirants into Group A and Group B to allow the judging panel a closer look at individual footwork and choreography.
According to Sanlih News Network (SETN), the tryout took place inside the Xinzhuang Baseball Stadium’s dance studio under a four-camera setup. The entire session ran for more than two hours.
Logistical hurdles followed. Producing content for YouTube under the platform’s algorithmic preferences for extended runtimes meant the published footage could not showcase the full scope of the tryouts. Editing the two-hour block to meet varied audience expectations proved demanding, and the resulting clips triggered online criticism after a participant was cut.
Weighing Veteran Input Against Final Authority
The backlash over the elimination also spilled over onto active Fubon Angels members who sat on the evaluation panel. Insider sources stressed that these veteran cheerleaders serve as core team executives whose scoring insights carry heavy weight, but final authority on any elimination rests exclusively with the club’s internal personnel rather than the panel members.
Club insiders noted that the extended recruitment model is designed to observe candidates continuously through ongoing internal training, peer interactions, and live on-stage performances. The strategy is meant to guarantee that anyone chosen meets internal team benchmarks alongside external market preferences.
A Mid-September Decision Nears
As the recruitment cycle barrels toward its mid-September conclusion, management continues to test the remaining hopefuls against heightened performance criteria.
