Larry the barfly, a regular face in the American animated series The Simpsons for 35 years, has died. The screenwriters decided to sacrifice the character.

Last Sunday, in the 765th episode Cremains the day, Larry’s swan song was put into the script. His death was completely unexpected. He suddenly dropped dead in Moe’s Tavern. The viewer then also got to see the funeral, which was attended by Homer Simpson, Lenny and Carl, among others. The characters had to realize that they knew Larry much less well than they thought for years, and that brought them into conflict with their conscience. Especially when they are mentioned in a farewell speech as his best friends, it hurts them.

‘Larry the barfly’ first appeared in the series on Christmas Day 1989, in the episode Simpsons roasting on an open fire. It was voice actor Harry Shearer who brought the cartoon character to life. He is part of the regular team of The Simpsons, because he is also the voice behind Ned Flanders, Mr Burns and Waylon Smithers.

It often happens that the makers of The Simpsons decide to remove minor characters after a long time. This has also happened in the past with Maude Flanders, Fat Tony and Bleeding Gums Murphy. The Simpsons will continue until May 2025 for the time being, because the contract was extended for two seasons at the same time a while ago.
