  • Samsung is slowly rolling out One UI 6.1 to 2022 and 2021 smartphones and tablets
  • The update is currently available in Korea, the “rest” of the world should see it soon
  • The update to One UI 6.1 has already been installed by 8.8 million users

This January, Samsung introduced an updated version of the One UI 6.1 environment for smartphones and tablets, the main novelty of which is the Galaxy AI function package. Artificial intelligence was first introduced to the flagship smartphones of the Galaxy S24 series, then as part of the update it was also extended to flagship and flexible devices from last year. This should have closed the list of devices supporting Galaxy AI, but in the end Samsung decided to expand it to even older models.

Samsung is letting artificial intelligence into two-year-old devices

Samsung in the middle of last month confirmedthat selected Galaxy AI features will also be available to phones and tablets introduced in 2022 and 2021. Now, apparently, their time has come – according to information from South Korea, the One UI 6.1 environment update is starting to slowly roll out to the following devices:

  • Galaxy S22, S22+ a S22 Ultra
  • Galaxy Fold 4 a Flip 4
  • Galaxy Tab S8, S8+ a S8 Ultra
  • Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra and S21 FE (select features only)
  • Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 (select features only).

The group of devices marked in bold should receive a practically complete Galaxy AI package, except for two functions – generative image editing and the Instant Slow-mo function, which creates slow-motion videos from classic shots, when artificial intelligence “invents” missing intermediate frames. This function is very demanding on the performance of the neural unit included in the chipset, and the models from 2022 do not have it.

However, owners of these devices can look forward to Circle to Search image search, live translations, text transcriptions and a number of other features that we have detailed described in this article. The second group of devices is supposed to be even worse off – according to the latest information, the Galaxy AI package is supposed to be limited to Circle to Search and Chat Assist functions.

The One UI update to version 6.1 for these older devices is currently only available in South Korea, but should be available globally soon.

Galaxy AI on 8.8 million devices

Samsung boasted this week that 8.8 million devices have received the One UI 6.1 environment (including Galaxy AI features) as part of the update since March of this year, in Europe alone they installed the update:

  • 75 percent of Galaxy Z Fold 5 owners
  • 80 percent of Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphone owners
  • 65 percent of Galaxy Tab S9 family tablet owners.

It should be noted that 8.8 million is not a high number, considering that last year alone a total of 31 million Galaxy S23 series smartphones were sold worldwide, as well as many flexible Galaxy Fold 4 and Flip 4 smartphones. Samsung aims to deliver the package Galaxy AI will be in the hands of more than 100 million users by the end of this year, so it still has a lot of work to do.
