In the South American country of Ecuador, two mayors lost their lives as a result of armed attacks in the last 2 days.

In the statement made by the Association of Municipalities of Ecuador (AME), it was reported that Jorge Moldonado, the Mayor of the town of Portovelo in El Oro state, was attacked by a gunman.

In the statement stating that Moldonado died in the hospital, it was emphasized that two mayors were killed in the last 2 days.

Camilo Ponce Enriquez, the mayor of the town of Azuay in Ande province, was also killed in an armed attack on April 17.

According to the news in the Ecuadorian press, both mayors were killed by criminal gangs engaged in illegal mining.

Mayor Brigitte Garcia and Regional Communications Director Jairo Loor of the city of San Vicente in Ecuador lost their lives as a result of an assassination attempt on March 25.

Garcia, the country’s youngest mayor, 26, and Loor were found dead in the vehicle they were traveling in.

A state of emergency was declared

In Ecuador, which has been struggling with a security crisis for a while, a state of emergency was declared on January 9 after the gang leader nicknamed “Fito” and several prisoners escaped from prison and bomb attacks were carried out on police vehicles.
