A similar situation occurred in Şehitkamil district. In Şehitkamil district, where the total number of voters is 535 thousand 964, 167 thousand 961 thousand voters did not go to the polls. CHP was elected mayor in this district with Umut Yılmaz, receiving 39 percent of the votes.

CHP Gaziantep Deputy Melih Meriç stated that the voters who did not go to the polls were mostly AKP voters and that they chose this path to “teach a lesson” to their party.

‘IT WAS ENOUGH FOR HIM TO COME TO THE CHURCH’

Another CHP deputy, Hasan Öztürkmen, also emphasized that there are disagreements between AKP mayors.

Öztürkmen stated that Tahmazoğlu, who won in Şahinbey and is the current mayor, is very close to the sect structures and that this situation attracted reactions and said, “However, he also has good relations with the public. “Despite the backlash, he won the election,” he said.

Öztürkmen stated that there were reactions from some AKP circles about the Metropolitan Mayor Fatma Şahin being under the protection of President Tayyip Erdoğan, and said that these contradictions could not be adequately evaluated by the CHP.

Öztürkmen said, “Our chairman Özgür Özel came to Gaziantep, came to Kilis. His arrival was enough for us to take Kilis. However, we could not take Gaziantep. This situation is an opportunity for CHP. “If we work hard, disgruntled voters can be won over,” he said.
