Geisinger has reached a critical milestone in the nearly $900 million expansion of the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, officially completing the structural steel installation for its new 11-story patient tower. The project, which is designed to modernize acute care in northeastern Pennsylvania, held a beam-topping ceremony on July 15 to mark the completion of the tower’s frame, according to official statements from the health system.
The expansion project, spanning more than 600,000 square feet, is scheduled to open to patients in 2028, with broader campus renovations expected to continue through 2030. As the facility prepares for the next phase of construction, the project remains on track to nearly double the size of the existing medical center, addressing a growing demand for specialized healthcare services in the region.
Addressing Regional Healthcare Demand
The expansion is a direct response to shifting demographics in northeastern Pennsylvania, where the population aged 65 and older is projected to grow by approximately 11% between 2023 and 2028, according to data provided by Geisinger. This demographic shift has created an urgent need for increased clinical capacity, specifically in areas related to trauma, critical care, and cardiovascular health.
The new 11-story tower serves as the centerpiece of this effort. By transitioning the hospital to an all-private-room model, the facility aims to improve both patient privacy and operational efficiency. The project is being supported by structural engineering firm O’Donnell & Naccarato, which has been managing the design and integrity of the building’s steel frame.
Ron Beer, Chief Administrative Officer for Geisinger’s northeast region, stated during the July 15 ceremony that the expansion is intended to provide better access to care in an environment that prioritizes patient comfort and healing. The facility is being built to accommodate the increasing complexity of modern medical procedures, ensuring that the hospital can meet the needs of the community for decades to come.

Infrastructure and Clinical Capacity
The expansion introduces significant additions to the medical center’s existing infrastructure. Once the tower is operational in 2028, the hospital will add 58 medical-surgical inpatient beds and 24 intensive care beds. These additions are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the hospital’s acute-care capabilities, which also include:
- Six new operating rooms
- 22 emergency treatment areas
- Three dedicated trauma bays
- Two structural heart procedure rooms
- Dedicated space for behavioral health emergencies
- Expanded cardiac catheterization laboratories and imaging facilities
These enhancements are designed to allow the medical center to handle a higher volume of emergency and surgical cases.
Future Timeline and Development
While the new tower is set to begin accepting patients in 2028, the overall project scope includes extensive renovations to the existing campus, which are expected to last through 2030.
