The Davie Police Department has officially closed its investigation into an alleged assault involving New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith, citing an inability to determine a primary aggressor due to conflicting accounts, a lack of independent witnesses, and the absence of definitive surveillance footage. According to police reports, the case is now classified as inactive, with officials noting that no further investigative steps can be taken without the introduction of new evidence.
The June 21 Incident in Davie, Florida
The investigation stemmed from a June 21 altercation at Smith’s residence in Davie, Florida. The individuals involved were Smith and a woman who served as his manager and provided childcare services for his son. While Smith and the woman confirmed they shared a past intimate relationship during high school and had engaged in casual sexual activity, both parties clarified they are not currently dating and do not have children together.

The situation gained public attention after the woman posted videos to social media claiming that Smith had physically assaulted her and stolen her property, including $800 and a laptop. Smith, however, provided a different account to law enforcement. He stated he discovered the woman inside his home without consent after she bypassed a requested drop-off point at his community’s security gate. Smith alleged that the woman stole high-value jewelry and watches—which he valued at $20 million—and that he used force to retrieve his property and remove her from his home. He further alleged that the woman punched and scratched him during the encounter.
Conflicting Accounts and Police Findings
Law enforcement officials documented injuries on both parties. Officers observed two scratches on Smith’s face and a “knot” on the back of his head. The woman presented a cut on the webbing of her right hand and a bruise on her left arm, which police noted appeared to be consistent with being grabbed. Despite these observations, there were no physical marks found to substantiate the woman’s claim that she had been choked.
The police report highlighted that the accounts provided by Smith and the woman “greatly deviated” from one another. While Smith provided Ring camera footage to authorities, the police stated that the clips only showed the woman aggressively knocking on the door and walking with a bag; no physical altercation was captured on video. Smith told investigators he did not know how to operate the broader security system at his home.
Failure to Provide Sworn Statements
The primary obstacle to the investigation was the consistent failure of both parties to provide formal, sworn statements. The woman was scheduled to appear at the Davie Police Department on June 24 and July 9 to provide a statement but failed to show up on both occasions. Her attorney later informed police that she would not be providing one.
Smith’s legal representation also informed police on July 9 that he would not be providing a statement at that time. Without these sworn accounts or independent witnesses to corroborate the events, investigators concluded that they could not meet the threshold to pursue charges.
Stakes and Future Implications
While the criminal investigation is currently inactive, the incident leaves several potential paths forward:
- Case Status: The Davie Police Department maintains that any future investigative action is entirely contingent upon the emergence of new information or evidence.
