For a long time, the kebab sandwich, which was invented by Turkish immigrants in West Berlin in the 1970s, was seen as street food for the people. For a few euros everyone could get a well-filled sandwich with meat and vegetables. But in recent years that price has risen sharply.

In Berlin, a döner now costs an average of around 7 euros, in some places the price is even approaching ten euros. This means that the beloved popular food is in danger of becoming a luxury product, according to the left-wing party Die Linke.

Student discount

In a proposal, the party writes to introduce a maximum price: 4.90 euros for a sandwich, 2.50 euros for students. According to the plans, every German should receive a weekly voucher with which they can buy a döner for a small price.

According to the plans, restaurants must be able to recover the remaining amount from the government. The costs for the ‘dönnerpreisbremse’, as the measure is called in German media: 4 billion euros per year.

High prices

The plan sounds like a joke, but is actually meant seriously, a spokesperson for Die Linke told the German newspaper Stern magazine. According to her, many Germans feel the high prices of food in their wallets. “It is not expected that the food industry and supermarkets will lower prices on their own,” she says. “If the government does not intervene, kebab prices will remain high.”

The chance that the price ceiling will be introduced is small. After a question on Tiktok, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz already ruled out the possibility of a maximum price for kebab.
