deutschland Ticket Drives Ridership Increase, Highlights Accessibility Needs in Landshut Region
Landshut District – Recent data confirms the positive impact of the Deutschland ticket on public transportation usage in the Landshut region of Bavaria. A request for information submitted by SPD state parliament member ruth Müller revealed significant increases in passenger numbers at most train stations since the ticket’s introduction in May 2023.
Passenger Numbers Surge Across the Region
With the exception of Bruckberg, Gündlkofen, and Landshut-Süd, all train stations in the Landshut district experienced a rise in passenger volume between 2023 and 2024. Landshut Central Station saw the largest increase, with 1,447 more travelers. Geisenhausen led smaller stations with a 425 passenger increase, followed by Vilsbiburg (246), Neufahrn (221), Ergoldsbach (136), Wörth (126), and Bayerbach (3).
Affordability and Climate Protection
“The increasing numbers clearly demonstrate the appeal of an affordable and convenient travel option like the Deutschland Ticket,” stated Ruth Müller. “Commuters traveling too and from Munich and Regensburg are particularly benefiting, contributing to climate protection efforts through increased train usage.”
Infrastructure Demands and Accessibility Concerns
Müller emphasized that increased ridership necessitates improvements to rail infrastructure. “More peopel choosing train travel means we must prioritize maintaining and expanding the rail network, and also modernizing stations to ensure they are barrier-free,” she said.
However, current state plans fall short of addressing these needs. While Bavaria aims to make 100 stations barrier-free by 2028, none are located in the Landshut region. This lack of investment poses a significant challenge for accessibility.
Equity and Inclusion in Public Transport
“This is a real problem,” Müller asserted. “Accessibility is crucial for older adults, parents with strollers, and individuals with disabilities to utilize train services. While Deutsche Bahn prioritizes projects based on structural condition, the state government must exert greater pressure to ensure equitable access.”
The impending integration of the Landshut region into the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV) further underscores the urgency of infrastructure improvements. Müller warned that increased passenger numbers resulting from the MVV connection will exacerbate existing accessibility issues.
Local Leaders Advocate for Immediate Action
Neufahrn Mayor Peter Forstner echoed Müller’s concerns, stating, “Even with the promise of barrier-free expansion between 2028 and 2033, accessibility must be addressed immediately. The MVV connection offers affordable travel to landshut and beyond, contributing to CO2 savings, but only if stations are accessible to all.”
The Path Forward
Müller concluded,“The success of the Deutschland Ticket proves that attractive offers are well-received. Now, we need the same political will to invest in infrastructure. Mobility should be a right for everyone, regardless of physical ability or location.”
