Professor Gheorghe Mărmureanu, former director of the National Institute for Earth Physics, but also a scientific researcher, gave us, exclusively for Playtech News, an interesting interview, 47 years after the terrible earthquake, on March 4, 1977, on the 7 2 degrees on the Richter scale, in which more than 1,500 people lost their lives. Is the long string of “tremors” from 2024 a bad sign? Find out why it is no longer advisable to shelter under the door frame in case of an earthquake.

Strong earthquake in Romania, a little while ago. The earthquake was felt in several cities

Since the beginning of 2024, dozens of low-intensity earthquakes have been recorded. On Thursday, there was another earthquake, measuring 4.2 degrees on the Richter scale, just a few days before March 4, when it is 47 years since one of the strongest earthquakes in Romania, and in which -over 1,500 people lost their lives.

Gheorghe Mărmureanu, specialist in seismology, also with studies in America, tells us what to expect in the next period:

“There’s still a long way to go before a major earthquake, let’s calm down, let’s get to work, these are normal tremors, we’re within the parameters. Don’t panic!”, says Gheorghe Mărmureanu, exclusively for Playtech News.

Where did Gheorghe Mărmureanu live during the earthquake of March 4, 1977?

Gheorghe Mărmureanu also revealed to us how he felt the earthquake of March 4, 1977, of over 7 degrees on the Richter scale:

“That earthquake caught me in the house, in the apartment in the Drumul Taberei neighborhood, in a four-story block, where I still live today. Here, in this area, there was no major damage. The block had absolutely nothing, it is very well built, so I didn’t feel it as 7 degrees, on the Richter scale, but as a much smaller one, of reduced intensity!”.

Gheorghe Mărmureanu also told us what his wife’s reaction was, during the earthquake that seriously shook Romania, 47 years ago:

“My wife was not scared, she is hardened, used to react correctly to earthquakes, she is no longer afraid. She looks at me and, if she sees that he is calm, she calms down too”, Gheorghe Mărmureanu told us, exclusively for Playtech News.

Is there a connection between the earthquakes in Ukraine and those in Romania?

On Wednesday evening, on February 28, 2024, another earthquake occurred near Romania, measuring 2.4 degrees on the Richter scale. The earthquake occurred in Ukraine, more precisely 98 km E of Tulcea and 98 km E of Izmayil, according to information provided by INCDFP.

But is there any connection between the recent earthquakes in Romania and Ukraine? What Gheorghe Mărmureanu says:

“The earthquake in Ukraine was a small one, in this area there have never been and never will be strong earthquakes, this is the historical truth. They now have a war there, they don’t need any more earthquakes, God forbid!”, the famous specialist in seismology also mentioned for Playtech News.

“Attention, keep calm! It can save your life!”. Toma Caragiu’s big mistake

Gheorghe Mărmureanu advises the population to be careful during earthquakes. Otherwise, we can risk our lives. He also mentions the case of the actor Toma Caragiu, who was trapped under the rubble, on the stairs of the block where he lived, in the center of Bucharest:

“I keep giving advice in vain, because, in case of an earthquake, everyone gets scared, forgets the rules, many jump out of the window or run from the building to the stairs, for fear that the building will collapse on them. Well, the actor Toma Caragiu died like that. That evening, he was having a brandy with Alexandru Bocăneț, and, scared, they ran up the stairs, which, by the way, also collapsed.

If they stayed in the house they didn’t do anything at all. That’s probably how it was written to them. So be careful, keep calm, in case of an earthquake! It can save your life! And it’s not advisable to sit under the door frame either, the new blocks are built very badly, it can be dangerous!”.

Gheorghe Mărmureanu also claims that if, following his repeated calculations, he suspects that a dangerous earthquake is approaching, he will announce this publicly:

“I kept thinking, I keep doing calculations. In the next ten years there won’t be a very big earthquake, out of the question. But, know that, if I suspect, I will feel that a strong earthquake is approaching, because I do calculations every day, know that I will go on TV and notify the population!”, Gheorghe Mărmureanu also mentioned to us , exclusively for Playtech News.
