Prices of basic foodstuffs such as grain and meat fell again in January. Average food prices were last this low in February 2021.

Compared to a year earlier, food was more than 10 percent cheaper. Due to good grain harvests, there was more competition between grain exporters. As a result, prices fell. There were also ample corn stocks worldwide, which was favorable for the purchasing price.

The range of meat products was equally large on the international market. The price of poultry, beef and pork fell for the seventh month in a row, this time by 1.4 percent compared to December.

The price of sugar has risen again. This is partly because Brazil receives less rain than usual, which is unlikely to benefit the harvest in April. Major sugar-producing countries such as Thailand and India are also struggling with drought.

World food prices are not immediately reflected in the Dutch supermarket. In between is a chain of sellers and producers, who often have long-term price agreements with each other.

If prices remain low for a longer period of time, this could have consequences for what we spend on groceries. Basic ingredients largely determine supermarket prices.
