The electric revolution in the automotive industry has many repercussions – both short and long-term. On the one hand, new jobs and huge superfactories are being created, but on the other hand, other market segments are shrinking. The consequences of the changes are already visible.

What do companies like Bosch, Continental and ZF Friedrichshafen have in common? All three come from Germany and all three decided to reduce employment at the beginning of 2024. In the case of Bosch, it is a large-scale action (at least 3,200 layoffs) spread over three years, while Continental has planned to remove over 7,000. full-time positions.

Suppliers of mechanical components, modules and elements needed for car production found themselves at a disadvantage. Chinese brands are growing in strength, and the increasing focus on the production of electric cars means that the demand for previously desirable parts has dropped significantly. However, forecasts do not predict an easier future for the German automotive industry. In an interview with the “Automobilwoche” portal, Frank Schwope, a lecturer in automotive economics at the University of Applied Sciences in Hannover, presents a black but most likely scenario.

It is estimated that at the beginning of 2024, approximately 270,000 people will be employed in German factories responsible for the production of car parts and their supply. people. However, by 2030 this number is expected to be as much as 25%. smaller.
