GoldDigger trojan for iOS wants to get into your bank account

A new trojan for iOS tries to steal your bank account information in a rather devious way. The GoldDigger trojan (this specific iOS iteration is also called GoldPickaxe) does this by extracting data from Face ID, documents and messages.

AI tools are then used to: deepfakes to make of you. A deepfake is a technique with which fake images of people can be created using AI. These images are often used to distribute fake videos, but they can also be used in other ways. They then try to gain access to your bank account with these deepfakes.

The GoldDigger trojan was first distributed through Apple’s TestFlight, which is Apple’s developer program. Apple has now removed the malicious app, but the makers immediately switched to MDM (Mobile Device Management). This is used by companies to manage various devices, including iPhones.

Users are asked to install a malicious profile and then download an app from outside the App Store. According to the report, the GoldDigger trojan is now mainly targeting iPhone owners in Vietnam and Thailand. But the malicious software can also easily be used in other countries.

This way you are safe – but be careful

The GoldDigger trojan is quite dangerous once you have it on your iPhone. But fortunately that is still quite difficult at the moment. As long as you don’t download strange things onto your iPhone outside the App Store, you are pretty much safe.

But the Trojan could become a lot more dangerous in the future. When Apple has to allow apps to be installed from other app stores, things will suddenly become a lot easier for malicious parties. You then have to look out a lot more carefully.
