Irish athletes delivered a series of strong performances on the opening day of the European U18 Championships in Rieti, Italy, highlighted by a national record in the women’s discus. Tara Laverty, representing Carrick Aces AC, secured her place in Saturday’s final with a standout throw of 49.46m, marking a new U18 national record for the Monaghan native.
The championships, which serve as a critical development stage for Europe’s emerging track and field talent, saw several Irish competitors navigate high-pressure qualifying rounds.
Discus and Steeplechase Successes
By surpassing the required distance on her first attempt, she automatically qualified for the final. Speaking on her performance, Laverty noted that the record-breaking throw helped settle her nerves. “I think it just eases the pressure for Saturday too. Very happy with the national record too,” she said. “I was just trying to stay as relaxed as possible and I guess it worked.”
Lucie Cawley of Sligo AC, the current Irish U18 record holder in the event, finished sixth in her heat with a time of 6:50.84. She was joined by Ally Duffy of Tullamore Harriers, who placed third in the second heat, clocking 6:52.32. Both athletes are now set to compete in the final scheduled for Saturday morning.
Progress on the Track
The men’s and women’s 400m events saw mixed fortunes but ultimately strong results for the Irish team. He will return to the track for the evening session on Friday.
In the women’s 400m, Evelyn Kwik secured automatic qualification for the semi-finals by finishing third in her heat with a time of 55.58 seconds. Her teammate, Aisling Shevlin, faced a tense wait after finishing fifth in her heat in 55.87 seconds. Following the conclusion of all heats, it was confirmed that Shevlin’s time was sufficient to earn her one of the non-automatic qualifying spots. Both Kwik and Shevlin are scheduled to race again in Friday afternoon’s semi-finals.
Not all Irish athletes found success in the qualifying rounds. Jack Collins of Tralee AC narrowly missed a spot in the 800m semi-finals, finishing fourth in his heat with a time of 1:55.57, just outside the top three automatic progression places.
Heptathlon Standing and Friday Schedule
