The feature, which has been available on Android phones, iOS, and Apple CarPlay for years, is currently appearing for select users via a server-side switch and the Google Maps beta channel.
The live speedometer appears as a floating icon on the dashboard. According to reports from Android Authority, the indicator changes color to yellow or red when a driver exceeds the posted speed limit, providing a visual warning to help maintain road safety and avoid traffic citations.
This update addresses a long-standing feature gap in the Android Auto ecosystem. While Google Maps has long offered speed limit indicators, the actual real-time speed of the vehicle was notably absent from the Android Auto interface, even as the same functionality existed on mobile handsets and competing car platforms.
