Google Messages Gains Partial text Selection – A Long-Awaited Feature
For some time, Google has been steadily improving its Messages app with updates designed to enhance user experience. Features like rich media support, anti-phishing measures, and improved group conversation tools have been added recently. Now,a new feature discovered in the beta version of the app promises to substantially improve usability: the ability to select and copy only a portion of a message, rather than the entire text.
Currently, Google Messages only allows users to copy an entire message. This can be cumbersome when trying to extract specific data like links, addresses, or phone numbers. Users have had to resort to workarounds, such as copying the entire message into a note-taking app to then isolate the desired text.
The new partial copy function addresses this issue by integrating with a redesigned contextual menu Google began rolling out in January. This menu appears when a user long-presses on a message and offers options like reply, forward, copy, favorite, delete, select more, and info.Users can now highlight the desired text segment and tap “Copy” to save it to their clipboard.
This update is expected to greatly improve the app’s ergonomics and streamline the process of extracting information from messages. As of now, the feature is hidden within the latest beta version of Google Messages. Users will need to be enrolled in the beta program to access it. A wider rollout to the stable version of the app is expected in the future, though a specific timeline has not been announced.
