GoogleS ‘Project Toscana‘ Aims to Rival Apple’s Face ID with Advanced Hole-Punch Facial Recognition
Google is reportedly developing a new facial recognition system, codenamed “Project Toscana,” that aims to surpass current Android facial unlock technology and even improve upon Apple’s Face ID. According to a report by TechAdvisor, the system is currently in testing at Google’s Mountain view headquarters.
While many Android phones offer facial recognition, it hasn’t been secure enough for tasks like authenticating payments or passwords, requiring good lighting conditions for reliable performance.Google’s Pixel 8 series began to address this with machine learning improvements, but limitations remain.
Project Toscana promises secure biometric authentication in all lighting conditions, utilizing only a single hole-punch camera cutout – a notable advancement compared to the wider notch still used by the upcoming iPhone 17 to house its Face ID components. An anonymous source who has reportedly tested the system claims it operates as quickly as Apple’s Face ID.
This wouldn’t be the first time an Android manufacturer has attempted advanced facial recognition. Honor and Huawei have previously implemented similar systems to Apple’s, as seen in devices like the Honor Magic 8 Pro. Google itself experimented with a more elegant Face Unlock system in the Pixel 4,but discontinued it with the release of the Pixel 5.
The key difference with Project Toscana is its ability to achieve this level of security and performance within a standard hole-punch camera cutout, a feat that previous attempts haven’t managed. If successful, and implemented in time for the Pixel 11, it would represent a significant leap forward in Android biometric security.
Google’s adoption of this technology could encourage other Android manufacturers to follow suit, even though past experiences – such as the slow uptake of Qi2 wireless charging – suggest this isn’t guaranteed.
