Migrant Speedboat Capsizes Near Rhodes, claiming Two Lives
A tragic incident unfolded in the Aegean Sea earlier today, resulting in the deaths of a man and a young boy. The pair were aboard a speedboat that capsized while attempting to evade the Greek coast guard near the island of rhodes.
The coast guard initiated a routine patrol in the eastern Aegean sea. They spotted the speedboat heading towards Rhodes and signaled it to stop.
Unfortunately, the vessel disregarded the order and attempted to flee. This led to a pursuit,during which the speedboat executed risky maneuvers. ultimately, these maneuvers caused the boat to overturn, throwing all passengers into the water.
Rescue efforts were swift. Two coast guard vessels successfully recovered 16 individuals - 12 men and four women – from the sea.Sadly, they also recovered the bodies of the man and the boy.
Authorities have arrested three survivors suspected of being involved in migrant smuggling.The individuals – a 30-year-old from Azerbaijan and two Armenian nationals aged 31 and 32 – face charges including causing a shipwreck, negligent homicide, and violating immigration laws.
This incident follows a similar tragedy just last week. Four people, including a child, perished when a migrant boat sank off the island of Lesbos. Thirty-four survivors managed to reach shore and were subsequently taken into police custody.
