GTA V Hits Massive Milestone: Over 230 Million Copies Sold Worldwide

Grand Theft Auto V has officially surpassed 230 million copies sold worldwide, according to commercial milestone figures shared by Take-Two Interactive during an investor earnings call. Nearly thirteen years after its initial launch, the title continues to pull in millions of new players every year, cementing its status as one of the most commercially successful entertainment products in history.

During the financial briefing, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick updated shareholders on the trajectory of the franchise. “The Grand Theft Auto series once again outperformed expectations, and to date, Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold more than 230 million units worldwide,” Zelnick stated during the call.

The game maintains an average pace of roughly 18 million copies sold annually—a milestone that many blockbuster video games fail to achieve over their entire commercial lifespan.

Sustained Consumer Spending and GTA Plus Growth

Beyond raw unit sales, Take-Two Interactive reported continued financial strength in recurring consumer spending across the franchise. Zelnick noted that recurring consumer spending metrics increased by 3% during the period.

Additionally, GTA Plus, the recurring subscription service associated with the game, “continues to thrive,” according to company leadership.

Take-Two’s resilience comes during a turbulent era for the interactive entertainment sector. The sector has faced severe cost-cutting measures, layoffs, and funding shortages over recent years. Despite these industry-wide pressures, Zelnick expressed confidence in the corporate strategy guiding Take-Two Interactive forward.

“We’ve remained in growth mode virtually the entire time,” Zelnick told investors, adding that the company intends to keep expanding its creative footprint to deliver future hits to the global market.

Expanding Audiences and the Horizon for Grand Theft Auto VI

Looking ahead, executive leadership at Take-Two believes the broader gaming market retains massive untapped potential. Industry estimates cited during the investor presentation place the total global gaming audience at approximately 2.5 billion people.

Zelnick emphasized that this vast player base leaves plenty of room for expansion, both in total player acquisition and monetization capabilities. “I think we’re just scratching the surface, both in terms of the size of the audience and its monetization,” he remarked.

This massive, growing global audience provides the backdrop for the future release of Grand Theft Auto VI.
