Hockey Indian League: Champions Reflect on a Transformative Experience
The Hockey Indian League (HIL) is rapidly gaining recognition as a premier competition, attracting top field hockey players from around the globe. Following a thrilling championship, winning players shared their experiences, highlighting the league’s impact both on and off the field. The tournament offers athletes a unique chance to broaden their horizons, compete internationally, and pursue ambitions beyond the sport itself.
Uruguay’s leading scorer, Teresa Viana, participated in the HIL for the first time, describing it as profoundly enriching for both her career and personal life. Initially drawn by the prospect of experiencing Indian culture and connecting with international teammates, Viana found the reality far exceeded her expectations.”I signed up as it seemed like a nice experience… but to be honest, the expectations I had were exceeded 10,000 times,” she shared.
Viana emphasized the value of the experience, encouraging others to embrace similar opportunities. “It’s something extremely beautiful and pleasant to get along with a group of players from different cultures, very diverse, to achieve the same objective,” she stated, attributing much of her positive experience to the extraordinary camaraderie within the team.
Spanish player Lola Riera echoed this sentiment, praising the strong team spirit. “We were lucky to have an unbelievable team on a human level,” Riera explained.”Both players and staff were on the same page. I have felt very supported at all times, and I think that has made it easier for everything to go so well.” She also highlighted the valuable learning experience gained from interacting with teammates from diverse backgrounds.
For Priscila Jardel of Argentina, her participation was somewhat unexpected, stepping in after another player’s withdrawal. Despite the short notice, she embraced the opportunity, describing the HIL as a “huge show” with an exceptional level of competition and a uniquely organized tournament structure. Jardel marveled at the rapid team building process, bringing together players from different nations and cultures.
Jardel further emphasized the importance of team cohesion, noting the coach’s focus on fostering connections and understanding among players. “Our coach put a lot of focus on us getting to know each other, on sharing, on creating bonds between us, and I think that made the difference on the field,” she said.
Ultimately,Viana beautifully summarized the transformative impact of the HIL,stating,”It was like feeling at home… in this tournament I could be myself, and when you can show yourself as you are,and be able to enjoy what you are doing, there is no reason not to enjoy,or be happy.” She expressed gratitude for the opportunity, describing the championship win as a dream come true and a testament to the incredible moments hockey can provide.
