Despite the terrifying ordeal,⁢ Swanson remained remarkably composed. He ​immediately turned to faith, stating, “I said my prayers to Jesus Christ. I believe in God, and he saved me.”

Fortunately, Swanson’s fellow lifeguards reacted with incredible speed and efficiency. They quickly reached him, brought him⁣ ashore, and⁤ initiated life-saving first aid. Crucially, they⁣ applied tourniquets to control the massive‍ bleeding.

Critical‌ Injuries and Surgical Intervention

The⁢ shark bite was exceptionally serious.⁤ Doctors at Queens Medical Hospital on Oahu confirmed the⁣ attack severed the main artery and vein in Swanson’s lower leg. He lost a significant amount of blood both ⁤during the rescue and throughout subsequent ⁢surgeries.

“He lost quiet a bit of blood – both in the process of getting off the beach,then in his surgeries,” a physician ​explained. The‌ rapid blood​ loss underscored the critical nature of the ‍initial response ‍by his colleagues.

“He’s young, he’s healthy, and he​ has the best ‌attitude,” one doctor stated.‍ “He has the best recovery potential. They emphasize they won’t declare ‌complete‌ success until Swanson is able to⁢ walk out of the hospital.

Swanson himself described the initial moments after the attack, highlighting his determination⁢ to stay conscious. “It ⁤was ⁣terrifying,⁢ but I couldn’t feel a thing,” he⁤ said.”My gameplan was just to stay awake. I ⁣was losing my⁢ vision. I was really weak.” He even attempted to apply‍ his own ⁢tourniquet, but found himself too ‌weak to do so.
