The shrinking donbas: A Region on the Brink
The eastern Ukrainian region of Donbas is facing an increasingly dire situation as the conflict with Russia continues. Since 2014, and escalating dramatically with the 2022 full-scale invasion, over three-quarters of Donbas has fallen under Russian control. This has led to a devastating demographic shift and a struggle for survival for those remaining.
Currently, the Luhansk region is entirely occupied. Remarkably, the population has plummeted from 5 million before the large-scale invasion to a mere 200,000. this represents a catastrophic loss of life and displacement of communities.
The remaining, accessible Donbas is now limited to a shrinking portion of the Donetsk region. cities like Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, along with numerous smaller towns and villages, are holding on despite relentless pressure from Russian forces.
What it’s like on the ground:
* Traveling through this area means navigating a landscape increasingly protected by anti-drone netting.
* You’ll find yourself removing your outdoor shoes to enter homes, often exchanging them for slippers offered as a sign of hospitality.
* The faces you encounter frequently enough bear the weight of years beyond their age, reflecting the trauma and hardship endured.
* despite the prevalent Russian language, you’ll hear consistent condemnation of the enemy.
* Perhaps most powerfully, a pervasive sense of finality hangs in the air – a feeling of witnessing a place on the verge of disappearing.
I’ve found that visiting these areas evokes a profound sense of witnessing a “last time,” a poignant realization of the fragility of life and community. It’s a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict.
The situation is incredibly complex, and the future of Donbas remains uncertain. However, understanding the current reality is crucial for anyone seeking to grasp the full scope of the crisis in Ukraine. It’s a region clinging to existence, and its fate will undoubtedly shape the future of the country.
