Kauai Lifeguard Survives Tiger Shark Attack: A Story of Resilience and Rapid Response
On November 5th, Hanalei Bay, Kauai, became the site of a harrowing shark attack. Chance Swanson, a 33-year-old lifeguard, was surfing when a tiger shark inflicted a severe bite to his leg. This is the story of his survival, the swift actions that saved his life, and his remarkably positive outlook during recovery.
The Attack and Immediate Aftermath
Swanson was enjoying a surf session when the attack occurred. He described a sudden, immense force clamping down on his leg, obscuring the source of the attack. “Next thing you know, somthing’s just chomping down on my leg,” he recounted. “It was so much force. I couldn’t see it.”
Despite the terrifying ordeal, Swanson remained remarkably composed. He immediately turned to faith, stating, “I said my prayers to Jesus Christ. I believe in God, and he saved me.”
Fortunately, Swanson’s fellow lifeguards reacted with incredible speed and efficiency. They quickly reached him, brought him ashore, and initiated life-saving first aid. Crucially, they applied tourniquets to control the massive bleeding.
Critical Injuries and Surgical Intervention
The shark bite was exceptionally serious. Doctors at Queens Medical Hospital on Oahu confirmed the attack severed the main artery and vein in Swanson’s lower leg. He lost a significant amount of blood both during the rescue and throughout subsequent surgeries.
“He lost quiet a bit of blood – both in the process of getting off the beach, then in his surgeries,” a physician explained. The rapid blood loss underscored the critical nature of the initial response by his colleagues.
A Positive Outlook Fuels Recovery
Despite the severity of his injuries, Swanson’s attitude has been a source of inspiration for his medical team.Doctors are optimistic about his recovery, citing his youth, overall health, and unwavering positivity.
“He’s young, he’s healthy, and he has the best attitude,” one doctor stated. “He has the best recovery potential. He’s on the right track.” While acknowledging the work ahead, the medical team remains cautiously hopeful. They emphasize they won’t declare complete success until Swanson is able to walk out of the hospital.
Swanson himself described the initial moments after the attack, highlighting his determination to stay conscious. “It was terrifying, but I couldn’t feel a thing,” he said.”My gameplan was just to stay awake. I was losing my vision. I was really weak.” He even attempted to apply his own tourniquet, but found himself too weak to do so.
