We’re moving beyond the promise of precision medicine – tailoring treatment to individual characteristics – towards precision prevention and precision well-being – proactively identifying risks and fostering optimal health for every individual.Generative and agentic AI systems will be instrumental in this shift, uncovering insights and pathways to wellness previously hidden within the complexity of health data.
Building trust and Enabling Responsible AI Adoption
Recognizing the immense potential – and the inherent responsibilities – of AI in healthcare, the Office of the National Coordinator for health Information Technology (ONC) has taken decisive action.We recently issued AI-based technologies integrated within their systems. This transparency is crucial, empowering providers to make informed decisions about the appropriateness of AI tools for their specific clinical settings and patient populations.
This focus on transparency is paramount to building confidence – both among healthcare professionals and the patients they serve. Furthermore, the recently released HHS Artificial Intelligence Strategic Plan outlines a comprehensive framework for public-private partnerships and targeted HHS initiatives to harness the power of AI across the entire health and human services landscape, extending beyond healthcare to life sciences, social services, and public health.

My tenure as leader of ONC has been driven by a single, unwavering goal: to invest in the organization and “leave it better than I found it.” From the outset,I pledged to challenge the status quo and accelerate the pace of change.I am deeply grateful for the patience and collaboration shown by stakeholders across the healthcare ecosystem.
Over the past four years, we’ve prioritized responsiveness to the evolving needs of patients, the industry, and our federal partners. We’ve actively sought feedback through extensive outreach – publishing 223 blogs and participating in 487 external events, with over half being in-person engagements – not just to communicate our work, but, more importantly, to listen.
internally, we’ve restructured ONC to better serve our sister agencies within HHS, recognizing that technology and data are now essential for achieving a truly integrated and impactful HHS mission. The creation of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy – built on the strong foundation of ONC – underscores the central role technology plays in all aspects of HHS’s work.
