## Launching Your Healthcare Career: Real Stories from TAFE NSW graduates
The healthcare sector is booming, and a skilled workforce is in high demand. But navigating the path to a fulfilling healthcare career can feel daunting. Fortunately, programs like those offered at TAFE NSW are providing accessible, practical training that’s launching individuals into rewarding roles. This article explores the success stories of two recent graduates – Ivee Allan and Angelica Rafty – and highlights the vital role vocational education plays in shaping the future of healthcare in New South Wales.
### From Patient to Provider: Ivee Allan’s Journey
Sometimes, the most powerful career inspirations come from personal experiences. For Ivee Allan, a stay at John Hunter Hospital after a severe concussion sparked a desire to provide the same compassionate care she received. She wanted to be “someone who helps others feel better when they’re at their lowest.”
Ivee strategically combined her high school studies with a School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT). This allowed her to complete a SBAT alongside her Year 11 and 12 coursework,culminating in a Certificate III in Health services Assistance.
This hands-on approach proved invaluable. Ivee gained practical skills like:
* Documenting clinical notes
* Providing wound care
* performing safe manual handling
* Effective team communication and collaboration
“The hands-on learning helped me thrive and gave me real insight into the health system,” Ivee explained. Her dedication didn’t go unnoticed - she was even a finalist for the NSW Training Awards in the Hunter and Central Coast Region for SBAT of the Year.
### Building a Foundation in Aged Care and Beyond: Angelica Rafty’s path
Angelica Rafty’s passion for healthcare stems from a deeply personal place: witnessing her grandparents’ care at home and her mother’s dedication to them. This inspired her to pursue a career where she could make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
Angelica began her training with a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability). She’s now furthering her education with a Diploma of Nursing at TAFE NSW Newcastle.
Her clinical placements at Lingard Hospital have been transformative. Angelica experienced a wide range of healthcare settings, including:
* Patient admission and discharge processes
* Operating room observation
* Airway management techniques
* Day surgery follow-up care
“all of my placements have been at Lingard Hospital, and they’ve been amazing,” Angelica shared. “I got to work in almost every area of the hospital.” She’s now employed at Lingard Hospital, putting her skills into practice daily.
