Henry Rollins Clarifies role in Newly discovered Punk Demo
Confusion arose recently regarding a new punk recording and the involvement of iconic figures Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye. Rollins has now addressed the situation, setting the record straight about his participation and the origins of the music.
He initially mentioned mixing tracks with MacKaye at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia. However, Rollins clarified that neither he nor MacKaye actually perform on the recording.
The project centered around a demo tape from a legendary, yet currently unnamed, punk band dating back to 1979. Rollins acquired the tape and had it professionally restored by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound in Nashville.
Subsequently, the tracks were sent to MacKaye at Inner Ear Studios for loading and mixing. The mixing process was remarkably efficient, thanks to the excellent original sound quality of the eight-track recording. Rollins emphasized the exceptional performances captured on the vintage tape.
He further explained that he contacted a member of the band before seeking permission to release the tracks. This careful approach ensured respect for the band’s legacy and ownership of the material.
rollins’ own musical history includes fronting the Washington, D.C.-based hardcore punk band State Of Alert in the early 1980s, before achieving fame with Black Flag.
MacKaye is a pivotal figure in the D.C. hardcore scene, having led Minor Threat from 1980 to 1983. He also founded the influential band Fugazi, along with The Teen Idles, and co-owns the self-reliant record label Dischord Records.
This news follows Foo Fighters’ summer release of a cover of Minor Threat’s “I Don’t Wanna Here It,” demonstrating the enduring impact of the D.C. hardcore sound.
