Sudan crisis: UN Rights Chief Condemns Escalating Violence and Calls for Immediate Action
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has issued a stark warning about the deteriorating situation in Sudan following a five-day mission to the country. Describing the conflict as “a chronicle of cruelty,” Türk implored regional actors and arms suppliers to urgently intervene and halt the escalating violence between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support forces (RSF).
Türk highlighted the immense suffering endured by the Sudanese people, emphasizing that despite the “abyss of unfathomable proportions” the country has fallen into, the spirit of resistance for peace, justice, and freedom remains unbroken. He witnessed firsthand the trauma inflicted upon civilians, including widespread reports of brutal attacks and the weaponization of sexual violence against women and girls.
the rights chief specifically condemned attacks on critical infrastructure, such as the Merowe dam, which could constitute war crimes. He also expressed grave concern over the situation in El Fasher, North Darfur, and the growing risk of similar atrocities occurring in the Kordofan region, where famine conditions are emerging.
Türk underscored the devastating impact of the conflict on vulnerable populations, sharing harrowing testimonies of displacement, loss, and trauma. He pointed to the increasing militarization of society, the proliferation of advanced weaponry – diverting funds from essential humanitarian aid – and the targeting of civil society and journalists.
he urged all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, ensure safe passage for those fleeing conflict zones, and allow unimpeded access for humanitarian assistance.Türk reiterated his call for a focus on human rights as central to building confidence and achieving a lasting peace, emphasizing the resilience and strength of the Sudanese people as a source of hope. He called on all involved to move beyond self-interest and prioritize the well-being of the nation.
