Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed that a second installment of Hogwarts Legacy is in active development.
After months of industry speculation, job listings, and executive hints, Warner Bros. Discovery has put the sequel on paper. The company directly referenced the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy
in its latest financial letter to shareholders, providing the open-world RPG with its first official corporate confirmation as part of its expanding games pipeline.
While the shareholder dispatch did not provide a specific release window, platform details, or gameplay trailers, it singled out the project as a major growth driver for the company’s long-term Studios segment. The formal confirmation shifts the status of the follow-up from heavily rumored industry assumption to official corporate reality.
Warner Bros. Strategy Pivots Toward Four Key Billion-Dollar Franchises
The announcement of Hogwarts Legacy 2 arrived alongside updates on other recent releases, including LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire. In the shareholder letter, management outlined a refocused corporate strategy centered on disciplined investment behind fewer, higher-conviction titles across four major properties with market caps exceeding $1 billion each.
“We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.”
Warner Bros. Discovery, Letter to Shareholders
That emphasis marks a deliberate shift for the publisher’s gaming division. Following a challenging period marked by misfires and high-profile cancellations such as Wonder Woman, leadership designated the four key $1 billion+ franchises as the company’s primary focus according to prior statements from global streaming and games CEO JB Perrette.
Unprecedented Sales Set High Expectations for Avalanche Software Sequel
The greenlight for a sequel was essentially guaranteed by the commercial footprint of the first title. Developed by Avalanche Software and released on February 10, 2023, the original Hogwarts Legacy sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, securing its place among the top-selling video games in history.

The first game also broke a long-standing industry pattern. In 2023, it became the first non-Call of Duty or Rockstar Games release to claim the top annual sales spot since 2009. Given those numbers, executive acknowledgment of a follow-up has been anticipated for years; back in 2024, CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels publicly called a successor one of the biggest priorities
for the company down the road.
Coordination With HBO’s Upcoming Harry Potter Adaptation
The interactive sequel is also developing alongside a massive multimedia reinvigoration of the Wizarding World. Warner Bros. is preparing to launch a high-profile television adaptation on HBO, which is scheduled to debut its first season this Christmas and is already advancing production on its second season with cast additions like Nicholas Hoult as Professor Gilderoy Lockhart.

Rowling has been noted as minimal for the games, corporate leadership has previously confirmed cross-media coordination. Former games division leadership indicated that teams were aligning big-picture storytelling elements between the upcoming HBO series and the expanding game pipeline, suggesting a synchronized multimedia strategy as both projects move forward.
