Holland & Barrett‘s Data-Driven Conversion: Building a Tech Advantage for Long-Term Growth
Holland & Barrett, the renowned wellness retailer, isn’t just selling vitamins and supplements – it’s undergoing a significant digital transformation fueled by a strategic investment in data analytics and in-house technology development. This isn’t a simple cost-cutting exercise; it’s a deliberate move to build a sustainable competitive advantage in a rapidly evolving retail landscape.
Recent financial results speak volumes. For the year ending September 30, 2024, Holland & Barrett reported a robust 10% year-on-year sales growth, with revenue climbing from £806.1m to £884.5m. Gross profit also saw a healthy increase, jumping to £524.2m from £475.7m the previous year. The company directly attributes this success, in part, to its ongoing tech transformation.
The Shift to In-house Expertise
This transformation represents a significant shift in strategy. Historically, Holland & Barrett relied heavily on third-party tech solutions, sourcing 80-90% of its systems externally. Now, the company is building 80-90% of its tech stack internally. This pivot was heavily influenced by former CTO George Goley, who, prior to joining Holland & Barrett, held leadership positions at Argos and Amazon.
Goley championed the idea of embedding data literacy throughout the organization, believing that companies obsessed with data are best positioned for success. His vision, implemented over the past few years, is now clearly bearing fruit. The focus isn’t simply on having data, but on activating it.
Building a New Analytics Team
Central to this strategy is the creation of a dedicated analytics function. Holland & Barrett is actively recruiting “full-stack analysts” – professionals who blend technical skills, storytelling abilities, and deep domain expertise.
the plan is to establish around 12 specialized analytics squads, each partnering closely with key business areas like supply chain, digital marketing, category management, commercial operations, and customer growth. This structure ensures that data insights are directly translated into actionable strategies within each function.
“Awakening the Data” and the Power of a Single Customer View
According to Dimitar Radichkov, a key leader driving this transformation, the team has made good progress in establishing a unified customer view. However, the next critical step is “awakening the data” – leveraging analytics to understand consumers on a deeper level and deliver personalized value to both the retailer and the shopper.
Radichkov emphasizes that analytics serves as a crucial bridge between data collection and business impact. It’s about transforming raw data into tangible value.
Why Build, Not Buy?
Holland & Barrett’s commitment to in-house development isn’t about avoiding costs. Radichkov argues that outsourcing would likely involve similar investment levels. Instead, the decision is driven by a desire for greater control and the ability to deliver a superior customer experience.
“By owning the tech, you can provide much higher value to customers when it comes to the experience in store, online, personalisation, search, checkout and so on,” Radichkov explains. This allows for rapid iteration, customization, and the development of unique features tailored to the specific needs of Holland & Barrett’s customers.
looking Ahead: AI,cloud Infrastructure, and digital Scale
The company’s ambitions don’t stop here. Key priorities for the coming year include leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to empower staff with self-service tools, building agentic AI workflows for process automation, and completing a full migration to cloud infrastructure by the end of 2025.
Holland & Barrett isn’t benchmarking itself against other retailers.Instead, it’s setting its sights on digitally native, cloud-first businesses like marketplaces and tech-focused consumer organizations. The goal is to build a scalable digital foundation capable of supporting a 100-fold increase in current capacity – a testament to the company’s long-term vision.
This isn’t just a tech upgrade; it’s a basic shift in how Holland & Barrett operates, driven by a commitment to data, in-house expertise, and a relentless pursuit of competitive advantage. The results so far demonstrate that this strategy is not only working, but positioning Holland & Barrett for sustained success in the years to come.
