Together you are less alone, but among yourself you are less ashamed. In the company of others you often feel obliged to follow etiquette and don’t want to be accused of not having had a good nursery. But if you’re alone at home – and that’s around 1.5 million people in Austria – you no longer have to be too strict about the rules of etiquette. After all, no judgmental gaze is directed at us.

Sleeping per se is nothing to be ashamed of. However, some people feel the need to justify staying in bed until lunchtime on the weekends. That’s why it’s something they tend to only do when they’re all alone in their four walls. The 30 to 39 year old age group is particularly in need of sleep; 54 percent of them indulge in long sleeps. In undisturbed moments, the Austrians even let body noises run free. Almost every second person surveyed does this, including significantly more men (57%) than women (38%). Age also plays a role in this habit, as people under 40 often simply let their body odors escape.
