The sensory blend of natural sights and sounds is associated with significant positive effects on mental health compared to loud, urban environments, according to new research published in the journal Environmental Conservation. Researchers at North Carolina State University investigated how different acoustic and visual environments shape mental health, discovering that natural settings outperform urban gray spaces in fostering psychological recovery and well-being.
To untangle the psychological impacts of physical location versus ambient sound, researchers conducted a controlled experiment utilizing noise-cancelling headphones. Study participants sat in either a reclaimed nature trail isolated from development or a busy urban area. The randomized design played either natural birdsong or traffic sounds regardless of the physical setting, allowing scientists to separate the effects of place from the effects of sound.
Participants subsequently reported changes in stress levels and evaluated their perceived restorativeness—a psychological metric reflecting how refreshed they felt after the experience. The experiment revealed that sensory context dictates emotional recovery, according to Nils Peterson, a professor in the NC State College of Natural Resources and lead author of the study.
How Natural Sights and Sounds Reduce Stress
The study found that environmental context influences emotional trajectory. When individuals experience green spaces paired with natural acoustic cues, positive emotional markers climb while negative psychological indicators decline.
“For participants who were in a green space listening to the birds, there were significant effects. Positive emotions went up, negative emotions went down, stress went down, and perceptions of feeling restored went up more than any other combination,” Peterson stated regarding the findings.
Conversely, the data highlighted the psychological footprint of urban environments paired with mechanical noise. “On the other hand, you had the complete opposite when participants in a gray, urban area listened to the sounds of cars, and more mixed reactions when the sounds and areas were mismatched,” Peterson noted.
Implications for Urban Planning and Public Health
Researchers emphasize that cities can counteract negative psychological outcomes through strategic interventions.
The findings suggest that altering the acoustic profile of a city through natural soundscapes can yield protective health benefits.
“When you have a really gray space that is going to stress people out and give them negative experiences, if you can change that space so that it has natural sounds, you can ameliorate the downsides of that gray space,” Peterson explained. He added that while the current study focused specifically on bird sounds, there is also a lot of literature supporting the use of water sounds and other things in nature.
