They were given 24 hours, could choose from four tasks and were supposed to surprise with their fresh ideas. Such were the conditions of the so-called Ideathon, a marathon of ideas for high school and university students. The popular event takes place in many places, thanks to the Regional Development Agency and the regional branch of CzechInvest, the 4th edition took place in Liberec this year.

The winner in the main university category was an idea for a playful application that would connect places and localities in the Crystal Valley through local mythological characters.

The idea in the competition was won by a two-member team, consisting of student Adam Soltan from the Technical University of Liberec and Taiwanese student Fang-Ying Lee from the University of Taipei, who is on an exchange stay in Liberec.

Interest in Taiwan

Adam first studied in Taiwan for half a year and then completed an internship there at the Czech embassy, focused on developing Czech-Taiwanese relations. When he returned to the university in Liberec, he met Fang-Ying, who is also logically interested in the topic of Czech-Taiwanese relations.

“We were talking about design and cultural projects that we would like to do together, and then we discovered an ad for Ideathon, where one of the tasks was a bit reminiscent of something we had already talked about,” Adam describes how it happened that the pair joined forces.

While 25-year-old Adam is studying management informatics at the TUL Faculty of Economics, Fang-Ying, who is five years younger, is completing an exchange stay at the Faculty of Arts and Architecture and at her alma mater in Taipei, she is devoting herself to a specific field, the design of educational materials.

“And that’s what motivated me when we were designing the game for Crystal Valley. I wanted to apply what I do at home,” Fang-Ying explained to Novinka.

It was she who came up with the design of the entire concept of how a playful application for Crystal Valley could look like. She designed cute characters, inspired by the protectors of the Lusatian and Jizera Mountains, the Bohemian Paradise and the Krkonoše Mountains, i.e. the areas into which Křišťálové údolí extends, an area full of glass smelters or museums or jewelry workshops.

She designed the characters in a cute style that Taiwanese people like. “In our country, various cultural organizations and companies use mascots as a symbol to attract visitors. We wanted to emulate that because we would like to target Asian tourists with our app and especially those from Taiwan,” she described.

Tourists would have to look for the characters in various places and with the help of the application, and therefore augmented reality, they could catch them. For the funny and winning idea, Adam and Fang-Ying received a lot of warm feedback and want to continue working on it. I hope it works out for them…
