East Harlem Ballpark Hosts Second Annual ICE Studios City Series
On a warm Saturday afternoon in East Harlem, New York City’s creative community gathered at a neighborhood ballpark for the second annual ICE Studios City Series softball tournament. Presented in partnership with adidas Originals, the event drew Black and Brown women from the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and beyond to trade downtown parties and networking events for custom jerseys, friendly competition, and an afternoon rooted in analog connection.
Created by photographer and creative director Renell Medrano, the tournament was inspired by her childhood memories of playing softball in the Bronx. Medrano designed the City Series to foster a genuine sense of belonging and teamwork among women, providing a physical space to build relationships outside of work routines and digital screens. As spectators lined the fences and children chased softballs through the grass, the day unfolded like a cross between a neighborhood cookout and a creative reunion.
Bridging New York’s Creative Networks Through Sport
The event highlighted the deep interconnections among New York’s creative communities, bringing together artists, photographers, stylists, and musicians who might not otherwise cross paths in their daily routines. Throughout the afternoon, players and supporters filled the stands with music, laughter, and cheers, underscoring Medrano’s vision of using sport as a vehicle for community building.
Team NYC Overcomes Early Deficit Against Dominican Republic
The centerpiece of the tournament was a highly engaging matchup between Team NYC and Team Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic squad established an early advantage on the diamond, capitalizing on a series of early struggles and foul balls from the hometown lineup.
However, Team NYC settled into the rhythm of the game, mounting a decisive comeback that energized the crowd and filled both dugouts with cheers. Teammates who had met just hours before celebrated every hit and defensive play with the enthusiasm of lifelong friends, embodying the spirit of friendly competition that defined the afternoon.
adidas Originals and Neighborhood Pride
adidas Originals supported the gathering by helping transform the East Harlem ballpark and outfitting participants in custom jerseys. The collaboration emphasized sport, style, and culture, turning a local athletic diamond into a vibrant celebration of neighborhood pride and collective joy.
Preserving Offline Connection in a Digital Metropolis
As urban life grows increasingly digital, events like the ICE Studios City Series offer a vital reminder of the value of gathering offline.
The event concluded with players and families lingering in the sunshine, underscoring the enduring appeal of simple neighborhood gatherings built on showing up for one another.
