In several regions of Latgale, restrictions have been set for the use of roads, the LETA agency learned from the municipalities.
The restrictions are set taking into account that the road surface is washed away by rain and thaw and the roads are damaged by the impact of trucks. There are vehicle weight limits and traffic restrictions.
On many roads, restrictions of one kind or another have been set in the municipalities of Balvi, Krāslava, Līvāni, Ludza and Preiļi regions.
Information about specific roads or sections of roads and traffic bans or restrictions is published by each regional municipality on its website.
Municipalities explain that during the thaw, when a large amount of water gets on the roads, the solvent gets on the gravel roads – the overmoistened gravel loses its load-bearing capacity and the driving conditions deteriorate. So that roads that have lost their load-bearing capacity are not irreversibly damaged, a road transport mass limit is introduced on them.
It is not possible to carry out maintenance work on gravel roads when the solution is present – if heavy equipment is driven onto a wet road that has lost its bearing capacity, it will be damaged even more. The condition of the gravel road can only be improved when it has dried.
