Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament a on his social page wrote: “The world has lost a warrior whose bravery will reverberate through generations. The death of Sakharov Prize winner Alexei Navalny is shocking. Russia took his freedom and his life, but not his dignity. His struggle for democracy lives on”.

The British prime minister said, “Aleksei Navalny, as the fiercest advocate of Russian democracy, demonstrated incredible courage throughout his life.” He added that his thoughts are with his wife and the people of Russia, for whom this is a huge tragedy.
Opposition leader, demonstration, prison sentence
47-year-old Alexei Navalny was held in a prison located just 65 kilometers from the Arctic Circle.
The opposition politician disappeared in early December from a prison in the Vladimir region, where he was serving a 30-year sentence on charges of anti-systemic activity and fraud, with each conviction counted, in what he called political retaliation for leading the anti-Kremlin opposition in the 2010s. In 2020, Alexei Navalny fell into a coma on a flight after being allegedly poisoned by Russia’s FSB security service. He was later evacuated to Germany for treatment. He subsequently recovered and returned to Russia in January 2021, where he was arrested for parole violation and sentenced to 9 years in prison.
Vladimir Putin recently launched a presidential campaign for his fifth term in office. He is already the longest-serving Russian leader since Joseph Stalin, and could overtake him if he runs for re-election in 2030. He has the opportunity to do so, as the constitutional rules on term limits were rewritten in 2020.
