In the summer of 2022, the Parliament decided that in 2024 local government and European Parliament elections will be held on the same day. The date of double voting is June 9. The big day is fast approaching, so more and more politicians and public figures are speaking out on the subject.

Gergely Karácsony gave an interview to Jelen, in which – according to Mandiner’s report – he also talked about the possible run for mayor of former State Secretary of Transport Dávid Vitézy. He believes that Fidesz does not have an offer, but a declaration of war for the people of Budapest.

They have discredited themselves so much here that it is easy to put forward a seemingly independent candidate. But you can’t fool the people of Budapest with this. If something quacks, it’s a duck. If someone has served Fidesz throughout his adult life, he is a Fidesz member. I think it’s a shame to argue about this

The complete moral degradation of power

After that, he also spoke about Péter Ungár, the co-chairman of the LMP:

Is there anyone in this country who believes what Péter Ungár says? I’m certainly not one of them.

Regarding the pardon case, he explained that “millions of voters can now feel the complete moral degradation of power.” The mayor is absolutely sure of his own victory, because they are doing a pro-life policy, “where our life will not be about politics, but politics about our life.” He is also convinced that Fidesz will have fewer representatives in the Capital Assembly than before.

Gergely Karácsony also spoke about the canceled flight reductions. He said that BKK and perhaps the city administration had indeed made a mistake. At the same time, according to him, it is not certain that a measure is inherently bad just because it is withdrawn.

What did the flight reduction mean?

As is well known, according to BKK’s previous announcement, from January 19 on Mondays and Fridays during peak hours, the schedules of several frequently operating flights in Budapest were changed. Pursuant to the measure, the BKK flights that, compared to the measured passenger traffic, were running more frequently or with several parallel flights, ran at most 1-2 minutes less often.

Mayor Gergely Karácsony argued that “thanks to the home office and flexible work schedule, fewer people travel than average”.

Later, the statement made by the CEO of BKK at a closed press conference on Thursday, in which he explained the reduced number of flights and the lack of consultation regarding them, caused a lot of controversy by saying that it would have been difficult to involve the passengers in this process, because it is like “thanksgiving I would ask the turkey before what to do with it”.

After the statement, former Secretary of State for Transport Dávid Vitézy, Fidesz faction leader in Budapest, and Péter Ungár, LMP faction leader and co-chairman, also called on the CEO to resign immediately.
