Israeli leaders wanted to agree on a short truce with Hamas on Saturday and the release of the Israeli hostages, reported.

According to the information of the news agency, however, the Palestinians see that the ceasefire is not justified, because the situation has not changed in the last five months.

Israeli delegates discussed the ceasefire in Paris on Friday with Qatari, Egyptian and American mediators, as a similar negotiation helped to conclude the ceasefire in November, by which several Israeli and Palestinian hostages were released.

Tzachi Hanegbi, the head of Israel’s National Security Council, explained after the negotiations that although Hamas has now rejected the truce, the Israeli delegates feel that some progress has been made during the negotiations. They said,

it is possible that a ceasefire agreement will be reached in the near future.

Hanegbi did not reveal any further details, but in response to a journalist’s question, he acknowledged with a nod that a ceasefire could be concluded by the time of Ramadan in March.

Meanwhile, thousands of people held vigil for the hostages in Tel Aviv on Saturday, and an anti-government demonstration took place in the capital.
